Early Morning Walk

Susurrant sounds of highway traffic,
not seen,
slow abrasion

though quick by geologic measures,
the mysterious journeys of others

The night sky clear.
Distantly, light is solid matter,
and also just memory

Down here,
the level of life
is coated in a diaphanous film

Light comes apart as water

A train wails nearby,
and the earth reverberates

Through my neighbor’s window,
sleeplessness,
the flickering of television.
